Knoxville News Sentinel calls for open government

In Advocacy on July 23, 2013 at 9:30 pm

The Knoxville News Sentinel is calling for greater government transparency in Gov. Bill Haslam’s administration.

The editorial board said this week, “Haslam needs to commit himself and his administration to greater transparency or risk undermining his accomplishments as governor.”

While the News Sentinel conceded there were a few points in the original editorial that were incorrect, the integrity of the newspaper’s advocacy for more openness in state government is in no way compromised. The newspaper is standing up for the citizens of the state of Tennessee by advocating for government accountability. We hope the governor’s team is paying attention. As the Sentinel said, “Greater transparency would inspire more confidence in Haslam’s leadership.”

This issue is not about the newspaper’s right of access to what is going on behind the scenes. It is about the rights of Tennessee citizens to know exactly what their government is up to at all times. Government belongs to the governed not the governing.
